Painting with different mediums

Other than using paints as a medium for children to draw, what else can you use as a medium for painting? Here are some interesting ways that we would like to share with you!

  • Ice cube painting

With food colouring, you can transform the ice cubes into different colours for painting. If you are focusing on sensory experience for your child during this activity, you could consider opting out the ice-cream stick when you freeze the food colouring. Supported by the adult's vocabulary, children will be able to incorporate their experience to the vocabulary that the adult is providing during the engagement of activity.

DIY Marbled Paper with Shaving Cream and Watercolors
  • Shaving cream painting
Again, with the use of food colouring, shaving cream painting is another form of painting which you could try with your child. The shaving cream provides a fluffy, smooth texture when touched. Similarly, if providing sensorial experience is the focus of the activity, we would suggest opting out the stick for swirling of paint. Children could use their hands/ fingers to explore the texture of material.

Tip: To prevent having a dark muddy colour upon swirling the shaving cream, provide only basic food colouring for the children. (Red, blue, yellow)

Bubble Painting for Kids and Artists : 8 Steps (with Pictures ...
  • Bubble painting
In order to achieve the colours in the bubbles, you could use food colouring, or water colour paint to mix with the soap that you're using. During bubble painting, it helps children to regulate and reflect on their actions as they paint with bubbles. For example, how much strength would one need when blowing the bubbles onto their canvas, in order to achieve the design that they have in mind.

These different mediums of painting allow children to explore their sense of touch. Materials such as ice cube, shaving cream and bubbles provides children with various experiences on the texture of the paint materials. Depending on your focus of the activity that you are achieving with your child, you could modify the painting activity accordingly.

Have fun and paint away! ðŸŽ¨
